Video Tips from Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band: Mastering Difficult Passages

Curated from Smartmusic’s Music Educator Blog – by Gordon Goodwin –

Given the chance, who wouldn’t eavesdrop on a recording session by Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band? Certainly no one in our office! Through our friends at Alfred Music, we recently got a glimpse of the Big Phat Band in the studio. What’s more, we had the unmitigated audacity to ask band members for tips while we were there. Of course, they obliged, and because we captured it all on video, you get the benefit of our geeky fandom.

Mastering Difficult Passages

In this, the first of a series of performance advice videos from members of the Big Phat Band, they share tips on how to master difficult passages. Whether you’re working on Big Phat Band tunes found in SmartMusic, or on something completely different, their insight can help you break down the process learning the tricky bits into bite-sized chunks.

Appearing in the video are:

  • Ray Brinker (drums) and Kevin Axt (bass)
  • Andy Martin (trombone) and Wayne Bergeron (trumpet)
  • Sal Lozano (sax) and Eric Marienthal (sax)
  • Craig Gosnell (trombone) and Jay Mason (sax)
